All Things Serve The Beam

For those of you who actually read my blog before commenting (heh heh) you have probably seen me mention that I am Tower Junkie. For those of you that don’t know what that is… it means I am obsessed with the Dark Tower. While I may not have it as bad as Roland, it’s bad.  I am Kai-mai but sometimes also Ka-mai. And on very rare occasions Ka-me. But I never forget the face of my father and I know all things serve the beam. I know Ka (or as Eddie calls it Ka-Ka) is a wheel; its one purpose is to turn.

That is the truth.

For those that have not read the Dark Tower books, I know you have no idea what I’m going on about… but that can change.

My love for the Tower should come as no surprise, I have said I almost exclusively read Stephen King, and The Dark Tower is the center of King’s universe.

I bring this all up again, because a few weeks back the Dark Tower movie came out. I of course saw it.

My readers know I don’t like to give away spoilers (well at least not on books and movies and TV shows, you know what I mean), so I don’t want to get too much into the movie here in this post. I’m guessing since it didn’t get that great of reviews most of you haven’t seen it, and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who may be waiting for it to hit red box or cable. I do want to say I feel most of the criticism is not quite fair. From what I’ve read most of those who didn’t like the movie didn’t understand what was going on and felt the characters and story line were not fleshed out enough. I can understand why some would feel that way, but the truth is quite the opposite. The true first story is very ambiguous and the few characters in it are not explained very much at all. The plot does not surface really tell the second and third book… but really doesn’t get going somewhere till the last 3 books.

I believe the fear of not giving enough plot and character background led the movie makers to try to add as much as they could while still leaving room for an ongoing tale. This is where it fails. The movie tries to tell us too much. It wants to make us care more about why the Gunslinger chases the man in black, but accomplishes the opposite.

There is actually stuff from the very last book in it, making the movie almost stand alone, skipping all that happens in between. More mistakes in my opinion.

In trying to give more they actually created an illusion that they gave less. So trust me, those of you who saw the movie may have felt you weren’t getting enough of the story, but the real problem was you were getting way too much.

I understand why they didn’t go straight for the sweet and simple western story of the first book. But at least when people said they didn’t understand the characters or their place in the story it would be because you aren’t supposed to yet, not because it was all jumbled up into one quick narrative. Plus The Battle Of Tull would have been so great to see on the big screen.

All this being said, I still feel this movie was a good movie and you should all check it out.

For one reason, I believe the plans for a HBO mini series is till planned, which will cover the 4th book in the series, “Wizard And Glass”.  And that should be freaking awesome. If they do it right (and I know, we have no proof they will), it should spark the interest needed to make a really good movie or continue it as a cable series and everyone will get the chance to be a junkie like me.

Still the best way is to read it.

Seven books, and 1 extra to sweeten the tale. Plus all the short stories and other King books that tie in. Not to mention the comics…

Yes, I’m a Tower Junkie, if any other Junkies or fellow travelers of the beam come across this post please feel free to comment, I’d love to know what you thought of the movie.

And if any of my readers saw the movie, I’m dying for a discussion on it… but I’ve already said too much on it in this post.

So just a warrning, Spoilers in the comments!

RIP 2016

So this is usually where I post a Top 10 “Fuck You” list for the previous year. I’m sure some of you are saying right now, “put yourself on your own Fuck You list”. And I totally understand. I probably would have put myself on the list this year.

The top 10 Fuck You’s of 2013 was the first post (other than the Eminem video) for this blog. I did it to get everyone’s attention and to show that this place would be different. I wanted a post that would say, “Man, I’m done saying that I’m done playing”  I’m gonna start playing. (yes that’s part of an Eminem lyric, dontcha love it?) Anyways, I looked for a cool picture to put up with the post, found this:

middle-finger

Yes, that would get people’s attention. So I made the post. I don’t even remember who was all on it. Flukeyou of course. I love writing (and saying) Fuck you Flukeyou!  MM7 and Dorothy were there. And a few others. I know some  really didn’t like being on it… and that was the point after all.

Well you will be happy to know (well some of you may be disappointed), there is no top 10 fuck you list this year. Mainly because I don’t need a list to say “Fuck You” on this blog, I find lots of other ways to do it. But also because I’m just want to get this year over with.

It’s been a rough one. To much death and tragedy. Some of my biggest heroes passed in 2016, right up to the final days. Princess Lea was my first crush. With all that went on in the world with terrorism and gun violence. An election that dehumanized us all.I just want this year gone.

I know next year doesn’t look to promising, but there are some things to look forward to. Twin Peaks is returning to Showtime this year! My favorite TV show of all time! Yes, I can’t wait. And I know there are some other Twin Peak fans out there… so “It’s happening again”.

Also my favorite book series “The Dark Tower” by Stephen King is finally hitting the big screen in 2017!  Oh man, I’m so excited about this!  I’m a Tower Junkie and I can’t wait for the world to see why!

Also we have a year of this blog to look forward to! That’s something, right? I know some of you don’t like that idea at all. Well, this is the last year of this blog, so you have that. And I mean it, Zero’s World will come to an end this year.

But I don’t want to think about that now. Now I just want to kick 2016 to the past. So raise a glass with me everyone and scream “REST IN PEACE 2016!”

Happy New Year Everyone! Well almost everyone. To the rest of you:

What’s In A Name?

There are many screen names involved in my blog, both in my posts and the comments, most come from LISK.com, others were created to mess with the Catching LISK blog (my opinion of course), and others like JOEYandDPH are new and were created by one of the other screen names to comment on my blog. I have heard where some of the names came from, (I think we all have heard why Joey chose Flukeyou) and others I could guess. Still there are some like PS149 that everyone thinks they know where the name came from. It seems that a few of you are curious about my screen name. So let’s clear it up, because some of their ideas floating around out there are just silly. Let’s start with Dinh.

As I already said in comment to Nancy yesterday, Dinh comes from the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, it means, leader or father:

Dinh

I am what they call a Tower Junkie, which means I am way into the Dark tower series, lol. So back in February when I was making my “Red & Black” blog I had to come up with a screen name, which was easy enough, I have been using zero since 1999 as my screen name, but although back then it was easy enough to use it, now when ever I come to a new site, that name has almost always already been used. As was the case here at WordPress. I was informed that screen name was already being used how about zero221144 or something like that.

So  I thought about what to add to zero to make it my new screen name, zero13, zero333, there are a few I thought about, but then I decided it was time for my nickname to have a last name. And that came immediately. Dinh. It was perfect, Zero Dinh, and if you are in on the meaning of Dinh , you might see it is to be read as Father Zero.  Father Zero, it had a nice ring to it. Of course that was for the “Red & Black” where Father Zero did apply. But on this blog, let’s face it, I’m just zero. And to understand where that name came from you have to go way back to 1984.
